פרק כא starts with the pasuk: {:he} >ויהי רעב בימי דוד שלש שנים שנה אחרי שנה ויבקש דוד את פני ה׳; ויאמר ה׳ אל שאול ואל בית הדמים על אשר המית את הגבענים׃ --שמואל ב כא:א And we connected that to the midrash: {:he} >כל הכסף והזהב הזה והקדישו לבית המקדש וכשבא רעב שלש שנים בקשו ממנו ישראל ליתן ולא רצה ליתן להם כלום. --ילקוט שמעוני רות רמז תרג So the question we need to answer now is, what did Saul do to the Givonim, why was Israel punished in the time of David, and what does that have to do with פרנסה? {:he} ><b>ב</b> ויקרא המלך לגבענים ויאמר אליהם; והגבענים לא מבני ישראל המה כי אם מיתר האמרי ובני ישראל נשבעו להם ויבקש שאול להכתם בקנאתו לבני ישראל ויהודה׃ <b>ג</b> ויאמר דוד אל הגבענים מה אעשה לכם; ובמה אכפר וברכו את נחלת ה׳׃ <b>ד</b> ויאמרו לו הגבענים אין לי (לנו) כסף וזהב עם שאול ועם ביתו ואין לנו איש להמית בישראל; ויאמר מה אתם אמרים אעשה לכם׃ <b>ה</b> ויאמרו אל המלך האיש אשר כלנו ואשר דמה לנו; נשמדנו מהתיצב בכל גבל ישראל׃ <b>ו</b> ינתן (יותן) לנו שבעה אנשים מבניו והוקענום לה׳ בגבעת שאול בחיר ה׳; > ויאמר המלך אני אתן׃ --שמואל ב פרק כא Note the paragraph break in the middle of the pasuk. There is a pause before ויאמר המלך אני אתן. David is aware of the trolley problem here: does he sacrifice seven apparently innocent men (the descendants of Saul, who presumably were not involved in הכתם בקנאתו) to end the drought and save the nation? I would even give David the benefit of the doubt here; the Givonim say אין לנו איש להמית בישראל. Maybe והוקענום לה׳ בגבעת שאול just means to hang them in stocks, to humiliate them? הוקע meaning "hang" occurs one other time in תנ״ך: {:he} ><b>ג</b> ויצמד ישראל לבעל פעור; ויחר אף ה׳ בישראל׃ <b>ד</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה קח את כל ראשי העם והוקע אותם לה׳ נגד השמש; וישב חרון אף ה׳ מישראל׃ --במדבר פרק כה The case seems similar: there is ויחר אף ה׳ בישראל, and someone needs to be hanged publicly--הוקע אותם לה׳ נגד השמש--to assuage חרון אף ה׳. {:he} >ודע דיונתן בן עוזיאל תרגם ”הוקע“, ”צליב“; ואונקלס תרגם ”וקטול“. --הכתב והקבלה, במדבר כה:ד Elsewhere in תנ״ך, the word means "displace": {:he} >וירא כי לא יכל לו ויגע בכף ירכו; ותקע כף ירך יעקב בהאבקו עמו׃ --בראשית לב:לג So maybe David told himself that the Givonim wouldn't kill anyone. Human beings are good at denial. But that is cutting David a little slack. Clearly, the Givonim wanted revenge. What did Saul do, that the Givonim bore a grudge for a generation? The Yerushalmi says he literally killed them, when he had the city of Nov annihilated. The Givonim were (יהושוע ט:כז)‎ חטבי עצים ושאבי מים לעדה; ולמזבח ה׳; they worked in the משכן. {:he} >שלח דוד וקראן. אמר להם: מה לכם ולבית שאול? אמרו לו: על ידי שהמית ממנו שבעה אנשים שני חוטבי עצים ושני שואבי מים וסופר וחזן ושמש. אמר לון: מה תון בעון? אמרו ליה: יתן לנו שבעה אנשים. --תלמוד ירושלמי סנהדרין ו:ז {:he} ><em>מה לכם ולבית שאול</em>: שלא ידע שהומתו גבעונים ביום שנהרגו כהני נוב ע"י שאול. --קרבן העדה, שם When Saul had his קנאתו לבני ישראל ויהודה (and read that not as "his zealotry on behalf of Israel" but "his jealousy about Israel") and wiped out the city of נב, the place of the משכן, he also killed some of the Givonim who were there. And Malbim goes further, to explain נשמדנו מהתיצב בכל גבל ישראל: {:he} > ואני אומר כי אחרי נהרגו הגבעונים אשר נמצאו אז בעיר נוב, שעל זה אמר אשר המית את הגבעונים, שפך שאול כאש חמתו גם על יתר הגבעונים הנמצאים בערי ישראל, וצוה לכלותם או לגרשם מן הארץ, אחרי שחשב עליהם כי ידם עם הכהנים המורדים, כי הם משרתי המזבח וכהני ה', והגם שנשבע להם יהושע להחיותם חשב כי הם הפרו ברית במה שמרדו במלך. --מלבי"ם, שמואל ב כא:א But why would Saul not be punished himself for such a terrible crime? In addition, I would imagine that we should have some reference to a genocidal war. So the Talmud Bavli proposes a more subtle answer: {:he} >וכי היכן מצינו בשאול שהמית הגבעונים? אלא מתוך שהרג נוב עיר הכהנים שהיו מספיקין להם מים ומזון, מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו הרגן. --יבמות עח,ב {:he} >א"ר יוחנן: כל הגוזל את חבירו שוה פרוטה כאילו נוטל נשמתו...ואומר: אל שאול ואל בית הדמים על אשר המית את הגבעונים. --בבא קמא קיט,א And the Malbim expands on that (Malbim thinks Saul literally killed Givonim, but his analysis applies even more if Saul impoverished them): {:he} >ויבקש שאול להכותם בקנאתו לבני ישראל ויהודה, והגם שלא קמה עצתו, בכ"ז כבר נתנו להפקר, ועשו בם איש הישר בעיניו, והיו לבז ואין מציל, גולים ומגורשים, שעל זה אמר ואשר דמה לנו ונשמדנו מהתיצב בכל גבול ישראל, *וגם אחרי מות שאול* שמלך איש בושת תחתיו, גם בני ישראל שמרו להם משטמת אביהם, ואין חונן ומרחם על ענים, וגם עת שמלך דוד לא שמו על לבם לתקן העוות הזה, כי היו נקלים ובזוים בעיניהם, והגם שכהני ה' הושבו לכבודם ולמאודם, הגרים האלה העשקים בידי עושקיהם כח, אין מנחם לדמעתם, וע"כ חרה אף ה' בעמו בימי דוד, ולפי דברי חכמינו זכרונם לברכה היה זה קודם מעשה אבשלום קרוב לתחלת מלכותו, וירא ה' וירע בעיניו כי אין משפט, ויבא רעב על הארץ כל מטה לחם שבר, כמו שנשברו האומללים האלה והיו מתי רעב. > והיה הרעב שלש שנים שנה אחרי שנה, כי בשתי שנים הראשונים תלו הדבר בעונות אחרים מעבודה זרה וגילוי עריות ושפיכות דמים כמו שאמרו חכמינו זכרונם לברכה, והחטא הזה לא עלה על לב איש לתקנו, ובשנה השלישית שלא מצאו עון אשר חטא בקש דוד את פני ה' ושאל באורים ותומים. --מלבי"ם, שמואל ב כא:א That is why all of בני ישראל were punished. The Givonim were a despised underclass, oppressed and abused by the Jews. It's an ugly way to look at our history, but all too realistic. The Givonim are the last of the Canaanites living in the land. There must have been what we would now call "Canaanophobia" against them. Even Joshua, while swearing to protect them, said (יהושוע ט:כג)‎ ועתה ארורים אתם; ולא יכרת מכם עבד וחטבי עצים ושאבי מים לבית אֱלֹקָי. But as long as they were serving לבית אלקי, they had both financial support, פרנסה, and social status. But with the destruction of נב, and the loss of the משכן there, they lost both. G. K. Chesterton put it harshly (but, I think, accurately) in his criticism of Zionism: >The true test of Zionism may seem a topsy-turvy test. It will not succeed by the number of successes, but rather by the number of failures, or what the world (and certainly not least the Jewish world) has generally called failures. It will be tested, not by whether Jews can climb to the top of the ladder, but by whether Jews can remain at the bottom...[I]f those they rule and judge are not Jews, then we have not established a commonwealth but only an oligarchy. It is said again that the ancient Jews turned their enemies into hewers of wood and drawers of water. The modern Jews have to turn themselves into hewers of wood and drawers of water. If they cannot do that, they cannot turn themselves into citizens, but only into a kind of alien bureaucrats...Hence a Jewish state will not be a success when the Jews in it are successful, or even when the Jews in it are statesmen. It will be a success when the Jews in it are scavengers, when the Jews in it are sweeps, when they are dockers and ditchers and porters and hodmen. --G. K. And it was a major city: {:he} ><b>א</b> ויהי כשמע אדני צדק מלך ירושלם כי לכד יהושע את העי ויחרימה כאשר עשה ליריחו ולמלכה כן עשה לעי ולמלכה; וכי השלימו ישבי גבעון את ישראל ויהיו בקרבם׃ <b>ב</b> וייראו מאד כי עיר גדולה גבעון כאחת ערי הממלכה; וכי היא גדולה מן העי וכל אנשיה גברים׃ --יהושוע פרק י My hypothesis (for which I have found no support or even mention in other sources) is that Shmuel moved it to גבעון specifically as a כפרה for what happened to the Givonim. In his paranoia, Shaul makes גבעון ‎ גבעוני-free. That is what they mean by נשמדנו מהתיצב בכל גבל ישראל, "we have been displaced from living in the borders of Israel". And in Malbim's reading, that injustice continued to the early days of David, at which time ה׳ decides it has been too long: {:he} >[The Midrash is discussing the famine in the days of David] > רבי הונא ורבי ירמיה בשם רבי שמואל בר רב יצחק: עקר אַוְתֶּנְטְיָא [αὐθεντία, original] שלו, לא היה ראוי להיות בימי דוד אלא בימי שאול, אלא על ידי שהיה שאול גרופית של שקמה, גלגלו הקדוש ברוך הוא והביאו בימי דוד. מתלא אמרין: שילו חטא ויוחנא משתלמא, אתמהא! > <br/>xkcd, [Inside Joke](https://xkcd.com/794) > אמר רבי חיא רבה משל לזגג שהיה בידו קפה מלאה כוסות וּדְיָטְרוּטִין [{:la}/diatretum/, cut glass bowl], בשעה שהיה מבקש לתלות את קפתו היה מביא יתד ותקעה ונתלה בה, ואחר כך היה תולה את קפתו. לפיכך לא באו בימי בני אדם שפופים, אלא בימי בני אדם גבורים, שהן יכולין לעמד בהן. --בראשית רבה כה:ג ה׳ doesn't bring this famine in the times of Saul, because the people aren't strong enough to handle it. I don't think שפופים and גבורים refer to physical strength, but strength in resources. בימי דוד Israel could handle famine better, because as a nation they were rich. And that is *why* ה׳ brings the famine then. They could have taken care of the outcasts, the lowest echelons of society, the Givonim. But they didn't. In Saul's time they had an excuse: there was constant war and poverty. But David had (Joseph Heller, [_God Knows_](https://www.amazon.com/God-Knows-Joseph-Heller/dp/0684841258), p. 256) "taken a kingdom the size of Vermont, and created an empire as large as the state of Maine". And so the מדה כנגד מדה was a drought, so that everyone will feel the hunger that the Givonim are feeling. And David's reaction was not to support the people, but to focus on building the בית המקדש. {:he} >...כל הכסף והזהב הזה והקדישו לבית המקדש, וכשבא רעב שלש שנים בקשו ממנו ישראל ליתן ולא רצה ליתן להם כלום. --ילקוט שמעוני רות רמז תרג And the בית המקדש cannot be built if the people are hungry: {:he} ><b>י</b> ועברתם את הירדן וישבתם בארץ אשר ה׳ אלקיכם מנחיל אתכם; *והניח לכם מכל איביכם מסביב וישבתם בטח*׃ <b>יא</b> והיה המקום אשר יבחר ה׳ אלקיכם בו לשכן שמו שם שמה תביאו את כל אשר אנכי מצוה אתכם; עולתיכם וזבחיכם מעשרתיכם ותרמת ידכם וכל מבחר נדריכם אשר תדרו לה׳׃ --דברים פרק יב {:he} ><b>א</b> ויהי כי ישב המלך בביתו; וה׳ הניח לו מסביב מכל איביו׃ <b>ב</b> ויאמר המלך אל נתן הנביא ראה נא אנכי יושב בבית ארזים; וארון האלקים ישב בתוך היריעה׃ --שמואל ב פרק ז But there are two parts of the condition: הניח לכם מכל איביכם מסביב and ישבתם בטח. And as Rabbi Eybeschutz said, ישבתם בטח is connected to פרנסה: {:he} >ונתנה הארץ פריה ואכלתם לשבע; וישבתם לבטח עליה׃ --ויקרא כה:יט Emmanuel Levinas sees where this kind of injustice can lead: >The Talmud also knows the fault of Saul toward the Gibeonites, for which we cannot find a trace in the Bible. It would have been an indirect one. In executing the priests of the city of Nov, Saul left the Gibeonites who served them without a means of subsistence. The Midrash affirms that the crime of extermination begins before murders take place, that oppression and economic uprooting already indicate its beginnings, that the laws of Nuremberg already contain the seeds of the horrors of the extermination camps and the “final solution.” --Emmanuel Levinas, [_Nine Talmudic Readings_](https://iupress.org/9780253040497/nine-talmudic-readings/), _Toward the Other_, p. 27 יותר טוב צדקה מבנין בית ה׳. And so ויהי רעב בימי דוד...על אשר המית את הגבענים. The trolley problem is much worse than we thought. The trolley is barreling down the track toward an unspeakable evil, and ה׳ tells David אל שאול ואל בית הדמים. Does G-d really want to David to pull the lever, to sacrifice seven men to save Israel's soul?
