This week I'd like to look at a perek that lends itself even more to that sort of analysis, one with which we are very familiar but probably never read in depth. תהילים‎ 145, "אשרי", is striking in the way it keeps changing grammatical person, from first person (I) addressing ה׳ in the second person (You), to third person (they) addressing ה׳ in the third person (Him). The מלבי״ם sees it as a sort of dialog between the psalmist and the rest of the world, but I think it reads like a unified work in two voices, a sort of concerto in words.</p> <blockquote><p>A concerto (from the Italian…) is a musical composition usually composed in four parts or movements, in which (usually) one solo instrument (for instance, a piano, violin, cello or flute) is accompanied by an orchestra.</p> <p class=source><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerto">Wikipedia</a></p></blockquote> <h3>The Lost Soloist</h3> <p>The whole perek, of course, is one work of praise to הקב״ה. It is the only perek of תהילים that is called a תהלה. The first "movement" is in the first person; David himself declaring that he want to praise הקב״ה as king of the world (I somehow imagine it as a simple violin theme): ארוממך אלוקי המלך. This is all David wants, every day (בכל יום) and always (לעולם ועד). And he starts: "גדול ה׳ ומהלל מאד." But then he comes against an insurmountable obstacle (this analysis is similar to that of Rabbi Avi Baumol, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/9652294527/"><cite>The Poetry of Prayer: Tehillim in Tefillah</cite></a>): "לגדלתו אין חקר"‎. ה׳'s greatness is incomprehensible. How can finite man even start to praise it?</p> <p>There's a wonderful phrase that I have seen in Rabbi Soloveichik's works (though I can't find the source right now), calling prayer a "horrific ontic arrogance." It really is a חוצפא for us to say that ה׳ is great. What gives us the right?</p> <h3>The Voice of History</h3> <p>The answer is in the next pasuk, with the start of the second movement. ה׳ has been praised since the dawn of history, and we learn how from previous generations: "דור לדור." While we cannot understand His essence, we can appreciate His actions, His manifestation in the world we live in: "ישבח מעשיך." What we see is "הדר כבוד הוד" and it is this that David can speak about. הדר, "splendor", as Rabbi Schwab (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1578195128/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1578195128&linkCode=as2&tag=bililitecom-20"><cite>Rav Schwab on Prayer</cite></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bililitecom-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1578195128" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />) says, comes from the root meaning "returning" or "reflecting"; the הדר that David acknowledges is the reflected glory of ה׳ in the world.</p> <p>David continues to talk about the praises of the generations until we finally hear them ourselves (the "orchestra"): "חנון ורחום ה׳," "טוב ה׳ לכל." Then David introduces another theme, that of מלכות, quoting the generations: "כבוד הדר מלכותו" and we hear his voice directly praising ה׳:‎ "מלכותך מלכות כל עלמים; וממשלתך בכל דור ודר."</p> <p>The "דור ודר" serves as a sort of bookend (an <i>"<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inclusio">inclusio</a>"</i> for the second movement of this perek, paralleling the "דור לדור" that started it. The third movement no longer is about the praise of ה׳, it <em>is</em> the praise of ה׳.</p> <h3>Sustenance and Salvation</h3> <p>It starts, of course, with a missing pasuk, the letter נ.</p> <blockquote lang=he>רבי יוחנן מפני מה לא נאמר נו"ן באשרי מפני שיש בה מפלתן של שונאי ישראל דכתיב (עמוס ה) נפלה לא תוסיף קום בתולת ישראל במערבא מתרצי לה הכי נפלה ולא תוסיף לנפול עוד קום בתולת ישראל אמר רב נחמן בר יצחק אפילו הכי חזר דוד וסמכן ברוח הקדש שנא' (תהילים קמה) סומך ה' לכל הנופלים. <p class=source>ברכות ד:</p></blockquote> <p>David wrote תהילים‎ with רוח הקודש; he was driven to write the words he wrote. He knew that the pasuk that started with נ would have the same theme as עמוס's "נפלה לא תוסיף קום." We speak about something similar when a secular author, להבדיל, is inspired by his muse. David lets us imagine the missing pasuk by the contrast with the next one, "סומך ה׳ לכל הנפלים" and the parallelism lets us fill in the blanks. The מהרש״א‎ (ברכות ד:ב, ד״ה לא נאמרה נון באשרי) explains that omitting the נפילה line hints that no fall is permanent, that ה׳ will always allow us to rise again. </p> <p>With עיני כל אליך ישברו we hear David's voice praising ה׳ again, but now he is not just echoing the voice of the previous generations. They were praising ה׳ for saving the fallen; David sees that we depend on ה׳ not just when we need rescuing, but our very existence is dependent on Him. As the מהר״ל says:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>ומזה תקנו כוס חמישי, כי אחר שתקנו ארבע כוסות של גאולה תקנו כוס חמישי נגד <em>הפרנסה שהיא גדולה מן הגאולה</em>, רק שהוא רשות שבלילה הזה תקנו ארבע כוסות בשביל הגאולה, אבל בודאי מצוה איכא כי כוס ה׳ הוא השלמת הגאולה, כי אחר שגאל אותם היה מפרנסם בכל צרכיהם והכל בכלל גאולה כמו שנתבאר למעלה וזה ענין כוס חמישי.</p> <p class=source>מהר״ל, גבורות ה׳, פרק ס״ד</p></blockquote> <p>Chazal see the verse of פותח את ידך ומשביע לכל חי רצון as the central pasuk of the entire perek.</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>כל האומר (תהילים קמה) תהלה לדוד בכל יום שלש פעמים מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא…משום דאית ביה פותח את ידך</p> <p class=source>ברכות ד:ב</p></blockquote> <h3>Finale</h3> <p>Almost all of the remainder of the perek is in the third person, as David and "the orchestra" present a series of praises of ה׳. They seem to have little to do with one another or with the overall theme of the perek, going from ה׳'s justice (צדיק ה׳) to His desire for prayer (קרוב ה׳ לכל קראיו) to His helping those who fear Him (רצון יראיו) to the destruction of the wicked (כל הרשעים ישמיד). Rabbi Baumol has a striking insight: these pesukim serve as an introduction to the perakim that follow, the ones we say as part of פסוקי דזמרה:</p> <p>צדיק ה׳ בכל דרכיו; וחסיד בכל מעשיו corresponds to עשה משפט לעשוקים נתן לחם לרעבים; ה׳ מתיר אסורים‎ (תהילים קמו‎)</p> <p>קרוב ה׳ לכל קראיו corresponds to רוצה ה׳ את יראיו את המיחלים לחסדו‎ (תהילים קמז‎)</p> <p>רצון יראיו יעשה corresponds to וירם קרן לעמו תהלה לכל חסידיו‎ (תהילים קמח)</p> <p>כל הרשעים ישמיד corresponds to לעשות נקמה בגוים; תוכחות בלאמים‎ (תהילים קמט‎)</p> <p>ויברך כל בשר שם קדשו corresponds to כל הנשמה תהלל י־ה‎ (תהילים קנ)‎</p> <h3>Coda</h3> <p>The final line, in addition to echoing the final perek of תהילים‎, brings us back to David's voice with an <i>inclusio</i> of תהלת ה׳ that returns to the theme of the first pasuk, but now ending with all humanity praising ה׳, with the "אמן" of the בית המקדש:‎ ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד. </p>
