This week's parasha is, of course, about building the משכן. <blockquote lang=he><p>ועשו לי מקדש; ושכנתי בתוכם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות כה:ח</footer></blockquote> The problem with the concept of a משכן for an infinite G-d is well known: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כב</b> ויעמד שלמה לפני מזבח ה׳ נגד כל קהל ישראל; ויפרש כפיו השמים׃...<b>כז</b> כי האמנם ישב אלקים על הארץ; הנה השמים ושמי השמים לא יכלכלוך אף כי הבית הזה אשר בניתי׃</p> <footer class=source>מלכים א פרק ח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁאָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְמשֶׁה עֲשֵׂה לִי מִשְׁכָּן, הִתְחִיל מַתְמִיהַּ וְאוֹמֵר כְּבוֹדוֹ שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מָלֵא עֶלְיוֹנִים וְתַחְתּוֹנִים וְהוּא אוֹמֵר עֲשֵׂה לִי מִשְׁכָּן, וְעוֹד הָיָה מִסְתַּכֵּל וְרָאָה שֶׁשְּׁלֹמֹה עוֹמֵד וּבוֹנֶה בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ שֶׁהוּא גָּדוֹל מִן הַמִּשְׁכָּן, וְאָמַר לִפְנֵי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא: כִּי הַאֻמְנָם יֵשֵׁב אֱלֹקִים עַל הָאָרֶץ...לְכָךְ אָמַר משֶׁה (תהלים צא:א): ישֵׁב בְּסֵתֶר עֶלְיוֹן...אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לֹא כְּשֵׁם שֶׁאַתָּה סָבוּר כָּךְ אֲנִי סָבוּר, אֶלָּא כ׳ קֶרֶשׁ בַּצָּפוֹן וְכ׳ בַּדָּרוֹם וְח׳ בַּמַעֲרָב, וְלֹא עוֹד אֶלָּא שֶׁאֵרֵד וַ<em>אֲצַמְצֵם</em> שְׁכִינָתִי בְּתוֹךְ אַמָּה עַל אַמָּה.</p> <footer class=source>שמות רבה לד:א</footer></blockquote> This is the source of the idea that the greatest miracle of all is that ה׳ allows the universe to exist: <blockquote lang=en><p>Infinity contracts itself: eternity concentrates in the fleeting and transient, the Divine Presence in dimensions and the glory of G-d in measurements. It is Judaism that has given the world the secret of <i lang=he>tzimtzum</i>, of "contraction", contraction of the infinite within the finite, the transcendent within the concrete, the supernal within the empirical, and the divine within the realm of reality. When the Holy One, Blessed be He...said to Moses, "And they shall make Me a sanctuary and I will dwell in their midst", he thereby revealed the awesome mystery that G-d contracts His Divine Presence in this world.</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Halakhic-Man-Rabbi-Joseph-Soloveitchik/dp/0827603975"><cite>Halakhic Man</cite></a>, p. 48</footer></blockquote> Now, this is subtly different from how we usually think of צמצום: at least for me, צמצום is a contraction "from"; ה׳ withdraws in some sense from us, giving us our own space. This is the idea of contraction "into"; ה׳ withdraws into a place that we can access. But both are aspects of the kabbalistic idea of צמצום. Unfortunately, I don't know and can't know anything about kabbalah: <blockquote lang=he><p>מכאן ואילך אין לך רשות לדבר, שכן כתוב בספר בן סירא: במופלא ממך אל תדרוש, ובמכוסה ממך אל תחקור. במה שהורשית התבונן; אין לך עסק בנסתרות.</p> <footer class=source>חגיגה יג,א</footer></blockquote> But since Rav Soloveitchik brought it up, I figure I'm allowed to try. The beginning of the Zohar on בראשית is completely obscure: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>בְּרֵאשִׁית</em>: בְּרֵישׁ הוּרְמְנוּתָא דְמַלְכָּא, גָּלִיף גְּלוּפֵי בִּטְהִירוּ עִלָּאָה בּוּצִינָא דְּקַרְדִינוּתָא, וְנָפִיק גּוֹ סָתִים דִּסְתִימוּ מֵרִישָׁא (נ''א מרזא) דְּאֵי׳׳ן סוֹ׳׳ף קוּטְרָא בְּגוּלְמָא, נָעִיץ בְּעִזְקָא, לָא חִוָּור וְלָא אוּכָם וְלָא סוּמָק וְלָא יָרוֹק ולָא גּוָֹון כְּלָל.</p> <footer class=source>זוהר בראשית א:טו,א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>At the outset of the decision of the King He made a tracing in the supernal effulgence, a lamp of scintillation, and there issued within the impenetrable recesses of the mysterious limitless a shapeless nucleus enclosed in a ring, neither white nor black nor red nor green nor of any colour at all.</p> <footer class=source>Soncino translation <i lang=la>ad loc</i></footer></blockquote> But Chaim Vital, the student of the Ari, explains the image: <blockquote lang=he><p>דע כי טרם שנאצלו הנאצלים ונבראו הנבראים היה אור עליון פשוט ממלא כל המציאות...וכאשר עלה ברצונו הפשוט לברוא העולמות ולהאציל הנאצלים...אז צמצם את עצמו א״ס בנקודה האמצעית...וצמצם האור ההוא ונתרחק אל צדדי סביבות הנקודה האמצעית ואז נשאר מקום פנוי ואויר וחלל רקני מנקודה אמצעית...</p> <p>והנה אחר הצמצום הנ״ל אשר אז נשאר מקום החלל ואויר פנוי וריקני באמצע אור הא״ס ממש כנ״ל הנה כבר היה מקום שיוכלו להיות שם הנאצלים והנבראים ויצורים והנעשים. ואז המשיך מן אור א״ס קו א׳ ישר מן האור העגול שלו מלמעלה למטה ומשתלשל ויורד תוך החלל ההוא.</p> <footer class=source>ספר עץ חיים א:ב</footer></blockquote> ה׳ is "the infinite light" and created an empty void within that is the universe, and within that is a בּוּצִינָא דְּקַרְדִינוּתָא, a shining lamp, that represents the light of ה׳ within our world. צמצום is both ה׳ contracting from the world and being contracted to limited places and times within it. Rav Soloveitchik often uses the term "numinous", the "sense of the holy", when we experience the presense of ה׳ in our world. <hr/> But why do I care about צמצום? I'm not a kabbalist. But it matters, because we are supposed to be מְצַמְצֵם as well: <blockquote lang=en><p>In keeping with the imperative of <i lang=he>vahalachta biderachav</i> (<i lang=la>imitatio Dei</i>), man must also engage in <i lang=he>tzimtzum</i>. Man expresses <i lang=he>tzimtzum</i> first and foremost by observing the precepts of the <i lang=he>halachah</i>. Fealty to Jewish law is unenforceable: there is no police....no punishment for violators. By following <i lang=he>halachah</i> despite the lack of an external enforcement mechanism, we engage in <i lang=he>tzimtzum</i>.</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, <cite>Derashot Harav</cite>, pp. 24-25, as quoted in <cite>Chumash Mesoras Harav, Sefer Shemos</cite>, שמות כו:יח</footer></blockquote> Rav Hutner makes a similar point (his definition of צמצום is slightly different: ה׳ limits His own power of creation in the universe, but the underlying theme is the same). <blockquote lang=he><p>והמה אי אפשר לנו לפתוח בהסברת הדברים האלו מבלי להוציא מידיה טעות בענינה של יראת שמים. טעות זו נתפשטה כל כך עד שגם המוציא לאור את ספר תומר דבורה חזר עליה, ולא עוד אלא שתלה הדרברים באילן גדול. ולמען ליבון הענין נעתיק את דבריו: ”נקל לדעת כי המדות כולן אהבה חנינה וחמלה נמצאות באדם משום שנשמתו היא חלק אלוקַ ממעל. אך אחת היא אשר השם דורש מאתנו מה שאין אצלו והיא היראה, כי אצלו יתברך לא יתואר יראה חס ושלום...“, עכ״ד. הרי תפס כהנחה פשוטה כי במדת יראת שמים לא יתכן לומר בה השתוות לדרכי המקום. ותפיסה זו היא טעות גרועה מאוד. כי לעולם זה הוא הכלל: אין לך שום תנועה בעבודת השם שלא תמצא כנגדה תנועה מקבילה במדותיו של מקום כביכול...</p> <footer class=source>פחד יצחק פסח, מאמר נד:א</footer></blockquote> And then he continues by citing the Ramban, explaining זכור ושמור שניהם נאמרו בדיבור אחד: <blockquote lang=he><p>ואמת הוא ג׳׳כ כי מדת זכור רמזו במצות עשה, והוא היוצא ממדת האהבה והוא למדת הרחמים, כי העושה מצות אדוניו אהוב לו ואדוניו מרחם עליו, ומדת שמור במצות לא תעשה, והוא למדת הדין ויוצא ממדת היראה.</p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, שמות כ:ח,ד״ה זכור את יום השבת לקדשו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ב</b>...וזה הוא שכתב הרמב״ן דהאהבה היא שורש של קיום מצות עשה, דהיינו משום שבשעה שהנפש נמצאת במזל של התפשטות נמשכים ממנה כוחות של ”קום ועשה“; ולעומתה היראה היא שורש לפרישה מעבירות, דהיינו משום שבשעה שהנפש נמצאת במזל של התכווצות, כוחותיה מצטמצמים ונכללים בתוכה, וממילא שולט בה המצב של ”שב ואל תעשה“...</p> <p><b>ג</b> מדה זו [צמצום] שהיא אחת ממדותיו של הקב״ה בהנהגת עולמו, היא המדה המקבילה למדת יראת שמים של עובד השם. דכשם שכביכול מתנהג במדה זו של צמצום עולמו לשמו ולכבודו, כמו כן מתנהג הוא עובד השם בצמצום עולמו לשמו ולכבודו של הקב״ה. הנהגת צמצום זו היא ההנהגה במדת יראת שמים.</p> <footer class=source>פחד יצחק פסח, מאמר נד</footer></blockquote> <hr/> So just as ה׳ withdraws to make space in the universe for us in His creation, we withdraw to make space for Him in our world. That's very nice and philosophical, but there is a practical application: Don't talk in shul!
