This week's parasha has Yaakov's theft of Esav's blessing. I want to look at an insight of Rabbi Fohrman about Rivka's role: {:he} ><b>ה</b> ורבקה שמעת בדבר יצחק אל עשו בנו; וילך עשו השדה לצוד ציד להביא׃ <b>ו</b> ורבקה אמרה אל יעקב בנה לאמר; הנה שמעתי את אביך מדבר אל עשו אחיך לאמר׃ <b>ז</b> הביאה לי ציד ועשה לי מטעמים ואכלה; ואברככה לפני ה׳ לפני מותי׃ <b>ח</b> ועתה בני שמע בקלי לאשר אני מצוה אתך׃ <b>ט</b> לך נא אל הצאן וקח לי משם שני גדיי עזים טבים; ואעשה אתם מטעמים לאביך כאשר אהב׃ <b>י</b> והבאת לאביך ואכל בעבר אשר יברכך לפני מותו׃ --בראשית פרק כז But afterwards, it looks like Rivka throws him under the bus: {:he} ><b>מב</b> ויגד לרבקה את דברי עשו בנה הגדל; ותשלח ותקרא ליעקב בנה הקטן ותאמר אליו הנה עשו אחיך מתנחם לך להרגך׃ <b>מג</b> ועתה בני שמע בקלי; וקום ברח לך אל לבן אחי חרנה׃ <b>מד</b> וישבת עמו ימים אחדים עד אשר תשוב חמת אחיך׃ <b>מה</b> עד שוב אף אחיך ממך ושכח *את אשר עשית לו* ושלחתי ולקחתיך משם; למה אשכל גם שניכם יום אחד׃ --בראשית פרק כז How can we understand Rivka's behavior? We've talked [before](/פרשת+תולדות+תשע״ד/) about the nature of the ברכה that Yitzchak intended to give to Esav: {:he} ><b>כח</b> ויתן לך האלקים מטל השמים ומשמני הארץ ורב דגן ותירש׃ <b>כט</b> יעבדוך עמים וישתחו (וישתחוו) לך לאמים הוה גביר לאחיך וישתחוו לך בני אמך; ארריך ארור ומברכיך ברוך׃ --בראשית פרק כז As opposed to the ברכה that he intended to give to Yaakov: {:he} ><b>ג</b> וא־ל שד־י יברך אתך ויפרך וירבך; והיית לקהל עמים׃ <b>ד</b> ויתן לך את ברכת אברהם לך ולזרעך אתך לרשתך את ארץ מגריך אשר נתן אלקים לאברהם׃ --בראשית פרק כח Yitzchak sees Esav and Yaakov working together to create the ממלכת כהנים וגוי קדוש, with Yaakov being the spiritual side and Esav the material supporter. Rivka doesn't see Esav in that role, and wants Yaakov to get *both* ברכות. We also pointed out that the נבואה that Rivka got about her twins could in fact be read both ways. {:he} > ויאמר ה׳ לה שני גיים (גוים) בבטנך ושני לאמים ממעיך יפרדו; ולאם מלאם יאמץ ורב יעבד צעיר׃ --בראשית כה:כג Rivka understood it like Artscroll: >...the might shall pass from one regime to the other, and the elder shall serve the younger. --Artscroll Chumash, {:la}/loc. cit./ But the מ־ of לאם מלאם יאמץ might not mean "more than", it might mean "from": "each nation will draw strength from the other". We see this later in our parasha: {:he} >ויאמר אבימלך אל יצחק; לך מעמנו כי עצמת ממנו מאד׃ --בראשית כו:טז {:he} >רצונו לאמר, על ידינו עצמת, שאתה לוקח השפע הראוי אלינו. --מלב״ם, שם, ד״ה כי עצמת ממנו And רב יעבד צעיר is ambiguous: {:he} >אמר ה׳ לשון דשמתמע בתרי אפי. דאלו אמר בהחלט שהרב יהיה עבד להצעיר, היה אומר ורב יעבד לצעיר. ואלו אמר בהחלט להיפך, היה אומר ורב יעבד בצעיר. עתה משמעו בשני אופנים: אבל איך שהוא, האחד יעבד את השני וזה תלוי לפי השעה. --העמק דבר, בראשית כה:כג, ד״ה ורב יעבד צעיר <hr/> I would assume (though many read the story differently) that Rivka and Yitzchak discussed this נבואה and their children many times over the years. But now, Rivka is going behind Yitzchak's back to fool him into giving the טל השמים ברכה. Or is she? Rabbi Fohrman (citing a teacher of his from Ner Israel, Rabbi Simcha Cook) says we may be reading too much into her instructions. {:he} ><b>ט</b> לך נא אל הצאן וקח לי משם שני גדיי עזים טבים; ואעשה אתם מטעמים לאביך כאשר אהב׃ <b>י</b> והבאת לאביך ואכל בעבר אשר יברכך לפני מותו׃ --בראשית פרק כז *She never says that he should pretend to be Esav.* She is telling him that Yitzchak expects Esav to get things done: >Recall, after all, what Isaac asks of Esau before he'll bless him: "Go hunt me some game and prepare it a delicacy, just the way I like it". Esau is a jack-of-all-trades. Not only can he hunt; he can prepare the meat, cook it, and make it into "delicacies"; he can present the food with grace and flair. He is, quite literally, a "doer", just as his name suggests. --Rabbi David Fohrman, <a href="https://korenpub.com/products/genesis-a-parsha-companion" ><cite>Genesis: A Parsha Companion</cite></a>, p. 103 Rivka is proposing that Yaakov can present himself as a "doer" as well, that he is therefore capable of managing the material side of the incipient nation. The irony is that Yaakov *isn't* going to do anything at all; *Rivka* is proposing doing all the work. And that is the extent of the planned deceit of Yitzchak. And Yaakov realizes this: {:he} ><b>יא</b> ויאמר יעקב אל רבקה אמו; הן עשו אחי איש שער ואנכי איש חלק׃ <b>יב</b> אולי ימשני אבי והייתי בעיניו כמתעתע; והבאתי עלי קללה ולא ברכה׃ --בראשית פרק כז >"You show up once, bring me food, and you expect me to think that all of a sudden you've changed? All of a sudden you're a doer? Look at these hands of yours, Son? Smooth, from never having done a day of hard labor. No blisters from arrows or a hoe, no scars from a spear or a sickle. Your hands show who you really are; why bother to pretend otherwise? --Rabbi David Fohrman, <a href="https://korenpub.com/products/genesis-a-parsha-companion" data-decodedhref="https://korenpub.com/products/genesis-a-parsha-companion"><cite>Genesis: A Parsha Companion</cite></a>, p. 103 That's why Yaakov is afraid he will be seen "כמתעתע", "like a deceiver"; not really a trickster but seeming inauthentic. He can't pull it off, to act like an Esav. And Rivka gives him Esav's clothes and the hairy goatskin, not to fool Yitzchak, but to give Yaakov the confidence to act: >The clothes Rebecca asks Jacob to wear aren't meant to be instruments to deceive his father. They're just another bit of motherly scaffolding to help Jacob approach his father in a frame of mind that won't be self-defeating. Even if the clothes don't yet express who he is *now*, perhaps this is his mother's way of tellig him she believes he can get there, that this is something he can grow into. --Rabbi David Fohrman, <a href="https://korenpub.com/products/genesis-a-parsha-companion" ><cite>Genesis: A Parsha Companion</cite></a>, p. 110 But things go terribly wrong. {:he} ><b>יח</b> ויבא אל אביו ויאמר אבי; ויאמר הנני מי אתה בני׃ <b>יט</b> ויאמר יעקב אל אביו אנכי עשו בכרך עשיתי כאשר דברת אלי; קום נא שבה ואכלה מצידי בעבור תברכני נפשך׃ --בראשית פרק כז This seems to be an outright lie, from Yaakov, the exemplar of אמת! We know how Rashi reads it: {:he} ><em>אנכי עשו בכורך</em>: אָנֹכִי הַמֵּבִיא לְךָ וְעֵשָׂו הוּא בְּכוֹרֶךָ. --רש״י, בראשית כז:יט That seems completely unreasonable, and doesn't change the dishonesty problem. But Rabbi Fohrman says that it reflects, not an intention to deceive, but Yaakov's own internal struggle. *Can* he really be Esav? Who is he, really? >So Jacob looks at himself, and the only certain thing he sees about this man standing before Isaac...are those clothes he's wearing. Suddenly, the clothes engulf the man wearing them, and despite himself, all he can say to his father is, "I am Esau, your firstborn". *The clothes define me now, because right now...I don't know what else does. --Rabbi David Fohrman, <a href="https://korenpub.com/products/genesis-a-parsha-companion" ><cite>Genesis: A Parsha Companion</cite></a>, p. 111 And once he's said it, his father takes him at his word, and Yaakov is trapped and the entire ugly story unfolds inexorably. That's why Rivka can say, את אשר עשית לו; this really was Yaakov's fault. >Oh, what a tangled web we weave<br/> When first we practice to deceive. --Sir Walter Scott, [_Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field_](https://www.nosweatshakespeare.com/quotes/famous/oh-what-a-tangled-web-we-weave/) And this seems to address the moral problem with the story. Rivka is innocent, and Yaakov makes a mistake. The Torah doesn't shy from describing the things that the אבות, at their level, did wrong. The consequences, the מידה כנגד מידה of this mistake will continue through the rest of the ספר, with Lavan deceiving Yaakov ((בראשית כט:כו)‎ לא יעשה כן במקומנו, לתת הצעירה לפני הבכירה) and the conflicts between בני רחל and בני לאה. <hr/> But there is a problem: ה׳ seems to approve of Yaakov's ultimate deception! There's no way a freshly-skinned goatskin would feel like actual human hands. There must have been Divine intervention for it to work. And the text hints at that: {:he} > ויגש וישק לו וירח את ריח בגדיו ויברכהו; ויאמר ראה ריח בני כריח שדה אשר ברכו ה׳׃ --בראשית כז:כז {:he} > בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁנִּכְנַס אָבִינוּ יַעֲקֹב אֵצֶל אָבִיו נִכְנְסָה עִמּוֹ גַּן עֵדֶן --בראשית רבה סה:כב The שדה אשר ברכו ה׳ has a special meaning for Yitzchak: {:he} >ויזרע יצחק בארץ ההוא וימצא בשנה ההוא מאה שערים; ויברכהו ה׳׃ --בראשית כו:יב When Yaakov approached, Yitzchak had the experience of his own divine blessing. And the מטעמים are blessed as well (we quote this in ברכת המזון, as בכל מכל כל): {:he} >ויחרד יצחק חרדה גדלה עד מאד ויאמר מי אפוא הוא הצד ציד ויבא לי ואכל מכל בטרם תבוא ואברכהו; גם ברוך יהיה׃ --בראשית כז:לג {:he} ><em>וָאֹכַל מִכֹּל</em>:...רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר מִכָּל מַה שֶּׁנִּבְרָא בְּשֵׁשֶׁת יְמֵי בְרֵאשִׁית. רַבִּי נְחֶמְיָה אוֹמֵר מִכָּל טוּב שֶׁהוּא מְתֻקָּן לֶעָתִיד לָבוֹא. --בראשית רבה סז:ב Clearly, ה׳ is telling Yitzchak that this ברכה is to be given to this person, and Yitzchak acknowledges it: גם ברוך יהיה. But how can Yaakov be rewarded for lying--especially when we see that Yaakov seems to be punished later? <hr/> I don't have an answer (and Rabbi Fohrman doesn't touch on this question). But I have a suggestion. The gemara says that each of the אבות were tested: {:he} >אמר רב יהודה אמר רב: לעולם אל יביא אדם עצמו לידי נסיון, שהרי דוד מלך ישראל הביא עצמו לידי נסיון ונכשל. אמר לפניו: רבש״ע מפני מה אומרים ”אלקי אברהם אלקי יצחק ואלקי יעקב“ ואין אומרים ”אלקי דוד“? אמר: אינהו מינסו לי ואת לא מינסית לי. אמר לפניו: רבש״ע בחנני ונסני! שנאמר (תהלים כו:ב) ”בחנני ה׳ ונסני וגו׳“. אמר: מינסנא לך ועבידנא מילתא בהדך דלדידהו לא הודעתינהו; ואילו אנא קא מודענא לך דמנסינא לך בדבר ערוה. מיד (שמואל ב יא:ב) ”ויהי לעת הערב ויקם דוד מעל משכבו וגו׳“. --סנהדרין קז,א (There's a lot here, about why נסיון is connected to our prayers, and what David was really asking for, ואכמ״ל. See the Tanach shiur, <//This Will Be on the Final>). Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky says that the tests of the אבות were challenges to their inherent nature, whether they could overcome the מידות that defined them to express their loyalty to הקב״ה. {:he} >אמנם נראה, שכמו שראינו אצל אברהם אבינו שהוצרך השי״ת לנסותו בעשר נסיונות עד שעלה ונתעלה למדרגתו הרוממה, כמו כן אצל יעקב היה צריך לעבור נסיון כדי לבחון את גודל מדרגתו ודביקותו בה׳... > כשבא הקב״ה לנסות את אברהם...הוכרח לנסותו באופן שנראה באילו הוא בניגוד ישיר ובכיוון ההפוך ממדת החסד. --אמת ליעקבת בראשית כז:יב Similarly, Yaakov's נסיון would be in the area of אמת; he would be faced with a conflict between his fealty to ה׳ and his dedication to the truth. Rav Kamenetsky says that this incident was that test, that he was commanded to deceive his father and did so. I would say the opposite (though I hate to disagree with Rav Kamenetsky). Yaakov failed this test; there was no divine command to deceive. I would say that his incident was a test for *Yitzchak*. Yitzchak is the exemplar of דין, judgment, distinguishing right from wrong. As Yaakov said, והבאתי עלי קללה ולא ברכה. In his father's eyes, there is either ברכה or קללה. There is no middle ground. And when he finds out what Yaakov has done, the דין demands קללה. But ה׳ gave him a clear message that Rivka was right; Esav would not be a partner to Yaakov in continuing the legacy of Avraham (we see Esav reject the ברכה and reject the land in פרשת וישלח). I would argue that ה׳ would have preferred Yaakov to get the ברכה of טל השמים ומשמני הארץ in some other way, but he was going to get it, and Yaakov had the free will to make the choices that he did. Yitzchak's נסיון was whether he could acknowledge that his judgment, his commitment to דין, was by definition imperfect. ה׳ said to give the ברכה to Yaakov, and Yitzchak said, גם ברוך יהיה. And that established Yitzchak's relationship to הקב״ה, and we now say אלקי יצחק.
