Kavanot:

Thoughts on Tanach and the Davening

Much of this discussion is based on Suzanne Last Stone’s article, The False Prophet as Self-Deceiver?.

With Parashat Re’eh, we start the section of laws that are emanations and penumbras from the third commandment:

Specifically, the “taking the L-rd’s name in vain” of a false prophet:

The story of נבואה is expanded in next weeks parasha:

And the talmud derives six forms of נביא שקר:

All these imply that the נביא שקר is a liar (בזדון דברו הנביא); they do not have any kind of communication from ה׳. But it’s not so simple. It is possible to truly believe that you are a נביא, that ה׳ spoke to you, when it isn’t true.

We’re on a mission from God.

There’s a fascinating story in מלכים א that’s worth going into in detail:

Note that צִדְקִיָּהוּ isn’t lying. He really did get a message sent by ה׳. It’s that ה׳ intentionally sent a false message לפתות, to seduce or entice, them. Such a case counts as a נביא שקר:

This seems horribly unfair, but it is in fact what ה׳ does, according to יחזקאל:

Similarly, a נביא שקר may be mistaken (“deluded” may not be too strong a word):

We can distinguish, as Scripture does, between true and false revelation, only the first of which is properly described as G-d’s word. In the Bible, when the things spoken by the prophets cannot be relied upon, they are called nevuot sheker,“unreliable prophecy.” Thus Jeremiah has G-d saying: “The prophets prophesy unreliable things in my name…. An unreliable vision, and divination, and worthlessness, and the deception of their own minds are these that they prophesy to you.” Note that the false prophets of whom Jeremiah speaks here are not accused of intentionally lying. Rather, they speak the “deception of their own minds.” As Ezekiel puts it, they have “set up idols in their minds,” deceiving themselves so they cannot see what is before them. This is, in my view, the best way of understanding the revelation of Parmenides, which is a misleading and unreliable revelation, and so should properly be attributed to a false god, or to the deception of his own mind, these two things being in my view just different ways of referring to the same thing.

Yoram Hazony, What Is Revelation?

So how can we, the audience, tell if a putative נביא is really telling us the will of G-d? Worse, how can the נביא themself tell if they’ve had a real נבואה? The problem has bothered philosophers to the point of denying the possibility of revelation (even for otherwise religious philosophers):

For Kant, the problem was epistemological. He claimed there to be no method of evaluating claims of truth that have their ground in the “particular character of the subject.” A judgment that is grounded in private experience, such as belief, is, for Kant, a persuasion having only private validity, because it is impossible to show “its validity for the reason of every man.” Hence, revelation, as a private experience that is not open to question, cannot have the status of a conviction. In his comments on the Akeda, the Genesis narrative of the binding and near sacrifice of Isaac, Kant pursued this point to question even prophecy’s private validity. Because prophecy is uncertain and may be true or false, the prophet has a moral duty to question his own experience. Kant framed the Akeda as a conflict between certain and doubtful propositions, juxtaposing the absolute certainty of the moral imperative not to slay one’s child with the uncertain appearance of G-d. Accordingly, Abraham should have questioned whether the command to slay Isaac was really from G-d.

Suzanne Last Stone, The False Prophet as Self-Deceiver?, pp. 341-342

And the midrash brings up this possibility specifically with respect to the עקדה:

So if I get a message and a mission from G-d, how should I respond? Do I rush out to the street corners, haranguing the passersby? Or do I talk to my psychiatrist about increasing my Zyprexa?

The halacha gives us a few criteria. First, the question only applies to what we’ve called a “certified prophet”, someone who can given הוראת שעה, who needs to be obeyed even if what he says is not in the Torah or even (temporarily) against the Torah. If you have a dream in which ה׳ tells you to be a good person, give צדקה and keep שבת, obey it. ה׳ comes to לבן and tells him not to kill his son-in-law. That doesn’t make him a נביא. Whether you call it a divine message, the superego or השגחה פרטית, that’s not what we are looking at here.

The Nature of the Experience

The first criterion for the נביא to determine whether their experience was truly that of נבואה is the overwhelming nature of that experience. There can be no doubt that it was an experience of the Divine.

We shall not think that what the prophets heard or saw in allegorical figures may at times have included incorrect or doubtful elements, since the Divine communication was made to them, as we have shown, in a dream or a vision and through the imaginative faculty. Scripture thus tells us that whatever the Prophet perceives in a prophetic vision, he considers as true and correct and not open to any doubt; it is in his eyes like all other things perceived by the senses or by the intellect. This is proved by the consent of Abraham to slay “his only son whom he loved,” as he was commanded, although the commandment was received in a dream or a vision. If the Prophets had any doubt or suspicion as regards the truth of what they saw in a prophetic dream or perceived in a prophetic vision, they would not have consented to do what is unnatural, and Abraham would not have found in his soul strength enough to perform that act, if he had any doubt [as regards the truth of the commandment].

Guide for the Perplexed, Friedlander translation, III:XXIV

If you have to ask the question, then you are not a נביא.

Obviously, this doesn’t help the audience to determine whether the putative נבואה is legitimate.

The Nature of the Prophet

(The following is from Rabbi Gil Student’s All About Prophecy)

Be honest with yourself: are you the sort of person who would be a נביא? A נביא has to be a צדיק גמור before they have a chance of being called:

The Nature of the Message

There are certain limitations inherent in the message of a נביא. They can’t create new laws and can’t abrogate any existing laws on a permanent basis. They can’t, even as a הוראת שעה, allow idolatry. They can’t carry a message from false gods. If the message contains any of that, then we (and the נביא themself) know that it is a false prophecy.

The Nature of the Wording

There’s another subtlety. The wording of a נבואה comes from the interplay of ה׳‘s message in the mind of the נביא and the נביא’s own understanding of it. If two prophets use the identical words, then at least one is lying or deluded:

Divine communication produces multiple formulations of a single divine message, because divine revelation is multifaceted and not capable of being fully captured or replicated in human speech. The individual speech of the prophet is thus a mark of true divine communication.

Suzanne Last Stone, The False Prophet as Self-Deceiver?, p. 354

(The prophecy of Moshe as expressed in the Torah is of course an exception.)

The Nature of Prophecy Itself

Professor Stone emphasizes that prophecy, revelation after the experience of מעמד הר סיני, is inherently uncertain and has to be treated like any other human, fallible, knowledge.

In placing emphasis on the process of self-scrutiny that the prophet could have engaged in before uttering his prophecy, the Talmud implicitly portrays prophecy as a twofold process corresponding to these two accounts. Prophecy consists of a spontaneous, subjective experience followed by an intentional act of suppressing or uttering a prophecy.

Suzanne Last Stone, The False Prophet as Self-Deceiver?, p. 350

In effect, a נביא is not telling us G-d’s word. They are testifying about G-d’s word.

The analogy of false prophecy to false testimony is suggestive and may be elaborated even further. Both the prophet and the judicial witness report private experiences they have observed, which are not subject to common knowledge or any other means of independent verification. In both cases, the credibility or trustworthiness of the reporter is at issue, and judgments must be made to accept such testimony, despite the limited capacity of humans to ascertain the truth of the matter.

Suzanne Last Stone, The False Prophet as Self-Deceiver?, p. 358

In the face of epistemological uncertainty, we have to fall back on normative heuristics:

We believe the נביא, and the נביא has to trust themself, because the Torah told us to: נמצאת אומר שכל נביא שיעמוד אחר משה רבנו אין אנו מאמינין בו מפני האות…
