This week's parasha starts with the commandment to Aharon about the "Torah" of the sacrifices. <blockquote lang=he><p>צו את אהרן ואת בניו לאמר זאת תורת העלה; הוא העלה על מוקדה על המזבח כל הלילה עד הבקר ואש המזבח תוקד בו׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא ו:ב</footer></blockquote> What does תורת העלה mean? We use the word תורה in a few related ways, to mean the physically written Word of G-d, or the sum of G-d's will (the "Oral Torah" as given on Sinai), or the מסורה, that Oral Torah as transmitted and understood through the generations. But how does that fit here? <blockquote lang=en><p>You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.</p> <footer class=source> <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093779/quotes">Inigo Montoya, <cite>The Princess Bride</cite></a></footer></blockquote> Our understanding of תורה as the totality of G-d's word comes from ספר דבדרים. Moshe uses it that way multiple times, for example: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> אלה הדברים אשר דבר משה אל כל ישראל בעבר הירדן; במדבר בערבה מול סוף בין פארן ובין תפל ולבן וחצרת ודי זהב׃...<b>ה</b> בעבר הירדן בארץ מואב הואיל משה באר את התורה הזאת לאמר׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> ומי גוי גדול אשר לו חקים ומשפטים צדיקם ככל התורה הזאת אשר אנכי נתן לפניכם היום׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים ד:ח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>מד</b> וזאת התורה אשר שם משה לפני בני ישראל׃ <b>מה</b> אלה העדת והחקים והמשפטים אשר דבר משה אל בני ישראל בצאתם ממצרים׃ </p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק ד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ויכתב משה את התורה הזאת ויתנה אל הכהנים בני לוי הנשאים את ארון ברית ה׳; ואל כל זקני ישראל׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים לא:ט</footer></blockquote> <hr/> But throughout ויקרא and במדבר is seems to have a different connotation. The word is always connected to a specific ritual, of sacrifices or of purification. A few examples: <blockquote lang=he><p>וזאת תורת המנחה; הקרב אתה בני אהרן לפני ה׳ אל פני המזבח׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא ו:ז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וזאת תורת האשם; קדש קדשים הוא׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא ז:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>לז</b> זאת התורה לעלה למנחה ולחטאת ולאשם; ולמלואים ולזבח השלמים׃ <b>לח</b> אשר צוה ה׳ את משה בהר סיני; ביום צותו את בני ישראל להקריב את קרבניהם לה׳ במדבר סיני׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק ז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לט</b> וכי ימות מן הבהמה אשר היא לכם לאכלה הנגע בנבלתה יטמא עד הערב׃ ... <b>מו</b> זאת תורת הבהמה והעוף וכל נפש החיה הרמשת במים; ולכל נפש השרצת על הארץ׃ <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק יא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>נד</b> זאת התורה לכל נגע הצרעת ולנתק׃ <b>נה</b> ולצרעת הבגד ולבית׃ <b>נו</b> ולשאת ולספחת ולבהרת׃ <b>נז</b> להורת ביום הטמא וביום הטהר; זאת תורת הצרעת׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק יד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>כט</b> זאת תורת הקנאת אשר תשטה אשה תחת אישה ונטמאה׃ <b>ל</b> או איש אשר תעבר עליו רוח קנאה וקנא את אשתו; והעמיד את האשה לפני ה׳ ועשה לה הכהן את כל התורה הזאת׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק ה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>זאת תורת הנזיר אשר ידר קרבנו לה׳ על נזרו מלבד אשר תשיג ידו; כפי נדרו אשר ידר כן יעשה על תורת נזרו׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר ו:כא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>זאת התורה אדם כי ימות באהל; כל הבא אל האהל וכל אשר באהל יטמא שבעת ימים׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר יט;יד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>[S]uffice it to say that the specific meaning of "torah" is a procedural law--a series of actions necessary for the completion of a given process. For example, the pasuk in Parshat Tzav, "zot torat ha'mincha..." (6:7-10) should be translated as, "This is the procedure for offering the korban mincha." This pasuk introduces the details regarding how the kohanim offer the mincha...</p> <p>Similarly, Parshat Tzav details the procedures regarding how each type of korban is offered. Herein lies the basic difference between Parshat Tzav and Parshat Vayikra. Whereas Parshat Tzav deals primarily with the procedures for offering the various korbanot, Parshat Vayikra focuses on which korban is to be offered under which circumstances.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://tanach.org/vayikra/tzav/tzavs1.htm">Rabbi Menachem Leibtag, <cite>The Difference Between Tzav and Vayikra</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <hr/> So תורה means "procedure"; I would translate it in context as "ritual". It presumably comes from the root להורות, to demonstrate or teach, and that's a little bit of a stretch from "teaching" to "the thing taught". And why does Moshe, in his book of דברים, extend that meaning to the entire corpus of Jewish Law? Actually, תורה in the general sense <em>does</em> occur before ספר דברים. It is used in this way, as part of our remembrance of יציאת מצרים (relevant to this time of year!): <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ח</b> והגדת לבנך ביום ההוא לאמר; בעבור זה עשה ה׳ לי בצאתי ממצרים׃ <b>ט</b> והיה לך לאות על ידך ולזכרון בין עיניך למען תהיה תורת ה׳ בפיך; כי ביד חזקה הוצאך ה׳ ממצרים׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק יג</footer></blockquote> So how should we understand תורה, in a way that puts these two usages together? I understand תורה like the Seforno: not so much the ritual, but the symbolism and meaning behind it: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>צו את אהרן זאת תורת העולה</em>: אחר שהגיד מעשה הקרבנות <em>אמר התורה הראויה לכל אחד ואחד</em>, אשר בה רמז חלק עיוני בהם. ואין ספק כי יש הבדל רב בין בני א־ל חי בפעולותיהם וכוונותיהם, דומה להבדל אשר בין מיני הקרבנות. והזכיר בעולה שכולה על המזבח לריח ניחוח, אמנם קצתה עולה בלהב המזבח, ואמר שהיא העולה באמת. וחלק ממנה אצל המזבח והוא הדשן...יוציאוהו אל מחוץ למחנה בבגדים פחותים, מכל מקום יהיה מוצאו אל מקום טהור</p> <footer class=source>ספורנו, ויקרא ו:ב</footer></blockquote> And he continues to propose meaning for all the details of the קרבנות. <blockquote lang=en><p>God is in the details. </p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/ludwig_mies_van_der_rohe_101419">Ludwig Mies van der Rohe</a> (<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1989/07/30/magazine/on-language-who-s-in-those-details.html">probably</a>)</footer></blockquote> <hr/> The idea that there are the rituals and also the meaning behind the rituals is implied in the text itself . The Torah (you know what I mean) clearly distinguishes between חקים and משפטים and תורת: <blockquote lang=he><p>אלה החקים והמשפטים והתורת אשר נתן ה׳ בינו ובין בני ישראל בהר סיני ביד משה׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא כו:מו</footer></blockquote> And every commentator has a different perspective on what that means. The Seforno is consistent (commenting on an earlier pasuk): <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמר ה׳ אל משה עלה אלי ההרה והיה שם; ואתנה לך את לחת האבן והתורה והמצוה אשר כתבתי להורתם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות כד:יב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>והתורה</em>: החלק העיוני ממנה.</p> <p><em>והמצוה</em>: הוא חלק המעשי ממנה.</p> <footer class=source>ספורנו, שמות כד:יב</footer></blockquote> And this is one explanation of the gemara (יומא כח,ב)‎ אברהם אבינו קיים כל התורה: he kept the concepts, not necessarily the details: <blockquote lang=he><p>עקב אשר שמע אברהם בקלי; וישמר משמרתי מצותי חקותי ותורתי׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית כו:ה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ותורתי</em>: המה תורה שבכתב ושבע״פ. כדאיתא ביומא כח,ב. הכלל שלמד סדר המצות שבכתב ובע״פ ו<em>הגה בכללי התורה</em>.</p> <footer class=source>העמק דבר, בראשית כו:ה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>[E]xperiential commandments, unlike the general precepts discussed above, are specific in nature. They express themselves through a parallel series of activity and experience: of inner movement and outer action...The Halakhah is no longer satisfied with the inner image, and it demands externalization and actual representation...</p> <p>The Halakhah is distrustful of the genuineness and depth of our inner life, because of its vagueness, transience and volatility. Therefore, it has introduced, in the realm of the experiential norm, concrete media through which a religious feeling manifests itself in the form of a concrete act. For instance, the precept of rejoicing on a festival, <i lang=he>simchat Yom Tov</i>, is realized through a double activity--experiencing the redeeming, uplifting and inspiring joy, on the one hand, and conforming to the external cultic standards of bringing <i lang=he>shlemamim</i> offerings...on the other.</p> <p>...The outer action required by the Halakhah in this group of experiential precepts is dramatic in nature. One does not just act; he acts something out...The action is kerygmatic, message-bearing.</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, <cite>Worship of the Heart</cite>, pp. 16-17</footer></blockquote> <hr/> This obviously does not mean that the ritual is unnecessary, but it gives us something when we no longer have the ritual. We do not have העלה המנחה והחטאת והאשם, but we still have התורה לעלה למנחה ולחטאת ולאשם: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמר; אדנ־י ה׳ במה אדע כי אירשנה׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית טו:ח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>...”במה אדע“ לא שאל לו אות אלא אמר לפניו הודיעני באיזה זכות יתקיימו בה אמר לו הקב"ה בזכות הקרבנות.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית טו:ו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>...א״ל תינח בזמן שבית המקדש קיים בזמן שאין בית המקדש קיים מה תהא עליהם, א"ל כבר תקנתי להם סדר קרבנות שכל זמן שקוראים בהן מעלה אני עליהם כאלו הקריבו לפני קרבן ואני מוחל להם על כל עונותיהם</p> <footer class=source>ילקוט שמעוני, תורה פרשת לך לך רמז עז</footer></blockquote> And learning that תורה gives us a glimpse into the mind of ה׳: <blockquote lang=en><p>The Torah was given as an invitation into the infinite expanses and depths of [H]is mind, precisely because G-d refuses to present [H]imself in finite form. The Torah is not G-d incarnate; it is not a finite embodiment of G-d; it is a bridge to divine infinity. G-d does not make [H]imself finite through the Torah; he gives finite, fallible human beings the means to commune with [H]is infinite mind. Through the naure of the law and its sanctifying regard to even the most minute of human actions, we can conceive of the loving nature of the Lawgiver; in the infinitude of the Torah we are given a glorious glimpse of the infinitude of the Almighty.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.firstthings.com/article/2010/10/torah-and-incarnation">Meir Y.
