<p>There's a very difficult paragraph at the end of this week's parasha:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויהי כי החל האדם לרב על פני האדמה; ובנות ילדו להם׃ <b>ב</b> ויראו בני האלהים את בנות האדם כי טבת הנה; ויקחו להם נשים מכל אשר בחרו׃ <b>ג</b> ויאמר ה׳ לא ידון רוחי באדם לעלם בשגם הוא בשר; והיו ימיו מאה ועשרים שנה׃ <b>ד</b> הנפלים היו בארץ בימים ההם וגם אחרי כן אשר יבאו בני האלהים אל בנות האדם וילדו להם: המה הגברים אשר מעולם אנשי השם׃ </p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ו</footer></blockquote> I spoke about this paragraph <a href="/שבת+בראשית+תשע״ד/">5 years ago</a>, and about how hard it is to translate בני האלהים: <blockquote lang=he><p>המתרגם פסוק כצורתו הרי זה בדאי; והמוסיף עליו הרי זה מחרף ומגדף.</p> <footer class=source>קידושין מט,א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ויראו בני האלהים</em>: רבי שמעון בן יוחאי קרא להון בני דייניא. רבי שמעון בן יוחאי מקלל לכל מאן דקרא להון בני אלהיא. </p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה (וילנא) פרשת בראשית כו:ה</footer></blockquote> אלהים meaning "judge" or "ruler" is attested in תנ״ך: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמר ה׳ אל משה ראה נתתיך אלהים לפרעה; ואהרן אחיך יהיה נביאך׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות ז:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>על כל דבר פשע על שור על חמור על שה על שלמה על כל אבדה אשר יאמר כי הוא זה עד האלהים יבא דבר שניהם; אשר ירשיען אלהים ישלם שנים לרעהו׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות כב:ח</footer></blockquote> And that's how Onkelos (and Artscroll) translate it: <blockquote lang=he><p>וַחֲזוֹ בְנֵי רַבְרְבַיָּא יָת בְּנַת אֱנָשָׁא אֲרֵי שַׁפִּירָן אִנוּן וּנְסִיבוּ לְהוֹן נְשִׁין מִכֹּל דִּי אִתְרְעִיאוּ.</p> <footer class=source>תרגום אנקלוס, בראשית ו:ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>...the sons of the rulers saw that the daughters of man were good and they took themselves wives from whomever they chose.</p> <footer class=source>Artscroll <cite>Bereishis</cite> 6:2</footer></blockquote> Rashi expands: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>בני האלהים</em>: בני השרים והשופטים...כל אלהים שבמקרא לשון מרות, וזה יוכיח (שמות ד:טז) ואתה תהיה לו לאלהים, (שם ז:א) ראה נתתיך אלהים.</p> <p><em>כי טבת הנה</em>: אמר רבי יודן טבת כתיב, כשהיו מטיבין אותה מקשטת לכנס לחפה, היה גדול נכנס ובועלה תחלה.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית ו:ב </footer></blockquote> The story of the בני האלהים is the story of the chaos of the antediluvian world; without laws or limits, the strong oppressed the weak: <blockquote lang=en><p>The Athenians offer the Melians an ultimatum: surrender and pay tribute to Athens, or be destroyed. The Athenians do not wish to waste time arguing over the morality of the situation, because in practice might makes right—or, in their own words, "the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must".</p> <footer class=source>Thucydides, <cite> History of the Peloponnesian War</cite> 5:89</footer></blockquote> <dl><dt><i lang="fr">droit du seigneur</i></dt><dd>The putative right of a feudal lord to have relations with his vassals’ brides (French, “right of the lord”)</dd></dl> <hr/> And punishment via a flood is a form of מדה כנגד מדה. ה׳ created laws and limits in the universe. If people won't accept those limits, then the universe won't: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ט</b> ויאמר אלקים יקוו המים מתחת השמים אל מקום אחד ותראה היבשה; ויהי כן׃ <b>י</b> ויקרא אלקים ליבשה ארץ ולמקוה המים קרא ימים; וירא אלהים כי טוב.</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כ</b> הַגִּידוּ זֹאת בְּבֵית יַעֲקֹב; וְהַשְׁמִיעוּהָ בִיהוּדָה לֵאמֹר׃ ... <b>כב</b> הַאוֹתִי לֹא תִירָאוּ נְאֻם ה׳ אִם מִפָּנַי לֹא תָחִילוּ אֲשֶׁר שַׂמְתִּי חוֹל גְּבוּל לַיָּם חָק עוֹלָם וְלֹא יַעַבְרֶנְהוּ; וַיִּתְגָּעֲשׁוּ וְלֹא יוּכָלוּ וְהָמוּ גַלָּיו וְלֹא יַעַבְרֻנְהוּ׃ ... <b>כח</b> שָׁמְנוּ עָשְׁתוּ גַּם עָבְרוּ דִבְרֵי רָע דִּין לֹא דָנוּ דִּין יָתוֹם וְיַצְלִיחוּ; וּמִשְׁפַּט אֶבְיוֹנִים לֹא שָׁפָטוּ׃ <b>כט</b> הַעַל אֵלֶּה לֹא אֶפְקֹד נְאֻם ה׳; אִם בְּגוֹי אֲשֶׁר כָּזֶה לֹא תִתְנַקֵּם נַפְשִׁי׃</p> <footer class=source>ירמיהו פרק ה</footer></blockquote> <hr/> And this is problem throughout history: בימים ההם וגם אחרי כן אשר יבאו בני האלהים אל בנות האדם. We read a chapter of תהילים every Tuesday: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> מזמור לאסף;<br/> אלקים נצב בעדת אל; בקרב אלהים ישפט׃<br/> <b>ב</b> עד מתי תשפטו עול; ופני רשעים תשאו סלה׃<br/>... <b>ו</b> אני אמרתי אלהים אתם; ובני עליון כלכם׃<br/> <b>ז</b> אכן כאדם תמותון; וכאחד השרים תפלו׃<br/> <b>ח</b> קומה אלקים שפטה הארץ; כי אתה תנחל בכל הגוים׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק פב</footer></blockquote> And it's worth remembering that אסף was the Levi who led the שירה in Jerusalem, and was also a נביא. His תהילים have a message, and are addressed to the powerful of his time. There is an echo of ויראו בני האלהים את בנות האדם כי טבת הנה; ויקחו להם נשים מכל אשר בחרו specifically in the story of David and Bat Sheva. <hr/> The gemara discusses the ceremony of נסוך המים on Sukkot. Part of that ceremony was the recital of the 15 (שירי המעלות (תהילים קכ-קלד. The gemara brings a very strange aggadah to explain the connection betwen שיר המעלות and bringing up the water: <blockquote lang=he><p>בשעה שכרה דוד שיתין, קפא תהומא ובעא למשטפא עלמא. אמר דוד: מי איכא דידע אי שרי למכתב שם אחספא ונשדיה בתהומא ומנח? ליכא דקאמר ליה מידי. אמר דוד: כל דידע למימר ואינו אומר יחנק בגרונו. נשא אחיתופל ק״ו בעצמו: ומה לעשות שלום בין איש לאשתו, אמרה תורה שמי שנכתב בקדושה ימחה על המים; לעשות שלום לכל העולם כולו על אחת כמה וכמה! אמר ליה: שרי. כתב שם אחספא ושדי לתהומא ונחית תהומא שיתסר אלפי גרמידי. .כי חזי דנחית טובא, אמר כמה דמידלי טפי מירטב עלמא! אמר חמש עשרה מעלות ואסקיה חמיסר אלפי גרמידי ואוקמיה באלפי גרמידי</p> <footer class=source>סוכה נג,א-ב</footer></blockquote> Rav Yaakov Medan sees this aggadah as hinting at the affair of David and Bat Sheva. ה׳ is accusing David of being guilty of the same sin as the בני האלהים--the people of power. And ה׳ threatens to flood the world again. I dealt with the role of Achitophel, Bat Sheva's grandfather, in detail in the <a href="/Frenemies/">Tanach shiur</a>, and I won't go into that now. But the bottom line is that Achitophel considers David's sin to be akin to סוטה, a problem of adultery. But it's not. The sin of the בני האלהים and of David is not ערוה, adultery; Bat Sheva never consents to be with David. The crime is חמס, violence: <blockquote lang=he><p>...חז״ל נתחבטו בחטא דור המבול האם עיקרוֹ עריות--”כי השחית כל בשר“--או חמס --”ותמלא הארץ חמס“. והכריעו חז״ל (רש״י בראשית ו:ג): ”לא נחתם גזר דינם אלא על החמס“...</p> <p>נשוב לדוד מלכנו. אף אם נֹאמר, שגט שנתן אוריה גט כשר היה...לא על טומאת עריות נחתם גזר דינם של דור המבול...ולא על כך נחתם גזר דינו של דוד.</p> <p>לא נחתם גזר דינם אלא על החמס.</p> <footer class=source>רב יעקב מדן, <a href="http://old.herzog.ac.il/tvunot/fulltext/mega18-19_medan.pdf"><cite>מגילת בת-שבע</cite></a>, עמ׳ 89-91</footer></blockquote> <hr/> In the aggadah, the waters retreat but go so far as to threaten drought. We've talked many times about the response to the chaos of דור המבול: the fascism of דור ההפלגה, the tower of Babel. Rules are necessary, but so is recognizing the importance of each individual. Government is like water: too little is bad; too much is equally bad. The שירי המעלות reflect, in part, David's learning this lesson, about creating a kingdom of (שמואל ב ח:טו) משפט וצדקה. <blockquote lang=en><p>The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal their bread.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/361132-the-law-in-its-majestic-equality-forbids-rich-and-poor">Anatole France</a></footer></blockquote> One שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת explicitly makes the connection between the power of evil men and the flood: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת לְדָוִד;<br/> לוּלֵי ה׳ שֶׁהָיָה לָנוּ יֹאמַר נָא יִשְׂרָאֵל׃<br/> <b>ב</b> לוּלֵי ה׳ שֶׁהָיָה לָנוּ בְּקוּם עָלֵינוּ אָדָם׃<br/> <b>ג</b> אֲזַי חַיִּים בְּלָעוּנוּ בַּחֲרוֹת אַפָּם בָּנוּ׃<br/> <b>ד</b> אֲזַי הַמַּיִם שְׁטָפוּנוּ נַחְלָה עָבַר עַל נַפְשֵׁנוּ׃<br/> <b>ה</b> אֲזַי עָבַר עַל נַפְשֵׁנוּ הַמַּיִם הַזֵּידוֹנִים׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קכד</footer></blockquote> One points out that we need the divine guidance to avoid the trap of fascism; even the צדיקים can find themselves wielding the שבט הרשע: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת;<br/> הַבֹּטְחִים בַּה׳ כְּהַר צִיּוֹן לֹא יִמּוֹט לְעוֹלָם יֵשֵׁב׃<br/> <b>ב</b> יְרוּשָׁלִַם הָרִים סָבִיב לָהּ;<br/> וַה׳ סָבִיב לְעַמּוֹ מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם׃<br/> <b>ג</b> כִּי לֹא יָנוּחַ שֵׁבֶט הָרֶשַׁע עַל גּוֹרַל הַצַּדִּיקִים;<br/> לְמַעַן לֹא יִשְׁלְחוּ הַצַּדִּיקִים בְּעַוְלָתָה יְדֵיהֶם׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קכה</footer></blockquote> And David offers this advice to his successor: without ה׳'s help, there is no hope for an enduring civilization: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת לִשְׁלֹמֹה;<br/> אִם ה׳ לֹא יִבְנֶה בַיִת שָׁוְא עָמְלוּ בוֹנָיו בּוֹ;<br/> אִם ה׳ לֹא יִשְׁמָר עִיר שָׁוְא שָׁקַד שׁוֹמֵר׃<br/> <b>ב</b> שָׁוְא לָכֶם מַשְׁכִּימֵי קוּם מְאַחֲרֵי שֶׁבֶת <br/> אֹכְלֵי לֶחֶם הָעֲצָבִים;<br/> כֵּן יִתֵּן לִידִידוֹ שֵׁנָא׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קכז</footer></blockquote>
